How should this medication be used?
Alprazolam is available as tablets, extended-release tablets, orally disintegrable tablets (tablets that dissolve quickly in the mouth) and concentrated solution (liquid) to be taken by mouth. The tablet, orally disintegrable tablet and concentrated solution are usually taken two to four times a day. The extended-release tablet is taken once a day, usually in the morning. Carefully follow the directions on the prescription label and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part not included. Take alprazolam exactly as directed.

To take the concentrated liquid, use only the dropper that came with the prescription. Draw the prescribed amount for one dose into the dropper. Squeeze the contents of the dropper into a liquid or semi-solid food such as water, juice, soda, applesauce or pudding. Gently stir the liquid or food for a few seconds. The concentrated liquid will completely blend with the food. Drink or eat the entire mixture immediately. Do not store for future use.

Remove the orally disintegrating tablet from the bottle just before taking the dose. With dry hands, open the bottle, take out the tablet and immediately place it on the tongue. The tablet dissolves and can be swallowed with saliva. The oral disintegrating tablet can be taken with or without water.

Extended-release tablets should be swallowed whole, without chewing, crushing or breaking them.
